Crypto heatmap
A crypto heatmap is a board of coins coloured by how much they moved. This page shows a short list of large coins so you can see bitcoin next to the others without opening a chart for each one.
Info only, not financial advice.
What the tiles show
Each tile is a coin. The figure is the latest price in US dollars from the CoinGecko cache the app already keeps. The percent is the 24-hour change. Green is up and red is down on that window. The list is bitcoin, ether, solana, BNB, XRP, cardano, dogecoin and avalanche. It is a scan list, not a ranking of what anyone should hold.
In the app you can size the same kind of board by market cap, so bitcoin occupies more of the picture than a smaller coin. This page keeps the tiles equal so a large price does not crowd the others out. Market cap and this colour are different facts. A coin can be large and quiet, or smaller and loud, on the same day.
How the page stays inside the data budget
CoinGecko's demo plan is a shared monthly budget. The app refreshes its coin list on a long cache, about half an hour, and this page reads that cache instead of asking for a new market list. Refreshing the page does not start eight new calls. The mini-widget on the page asks the same cache about once a minute, and the edge cache answers when the list has not expired.
If the cache has no live row for a coin, the tile is marked as a sample and the change is left blank. A blank change is more honest than a zero that looks like a flat day.
Using the board
Look for agreement and for outliers. A day when almost every tile is the same colour is a broad crypto move. A day when bitcoin is quiet and one other tile is not is a narrower story. The heatmap will not tell you the reason. The bitcoin page and the ether page on this site each take one coin and leave the neighbours visible, if you want a single name with the board still in view.
Prices move after the cache. A tile is a recent print, not a ticket. Nothing here is a suggestion to buy or sell a coin. Open the app to build a board of the coins you actually follow, including names that are not on this short list.
Questions
- Where do the crypto prices come from?
- The CoinGecko cache the app already uses. This page does not start a separate market-list download on every view.
- Why these coins and not the whole market?
- A short list stays readable on a phone. The app can hold a much larger board, including coins you search for.
- Is a green tile a recommendation?
- No. Green means the 24-hour change was positive. It is not advice.
